We have all found ourselves in a crisis, a conflict with someone important in our lives or overwhelmed by emotion and circumstances. It can be difficult to maintain emotional balance while figuring out just how to navigate through those stressful times. For some, repetitive stressful events and an inability to recover fully from an event before another one occurs, results in variable destructive behaviors. It takes skills to solve life’s problems while enduring intense emotion. DBT skills training is based on a dialectical and biosocial theory of psychological disorder that emphasizes the role of difficulties in regulating emotions and behavior. Emotion dysregulation has been linked to a variety of mental health problems stemming from patterns of instability in emotion regulation, impulse control, interpersonal relationships, and self-image. DBT skills are aimed directly at these dysfunctional patterns. The overall goal of DBT skills training is to help individuals change behavioral, emotional, thinking, and interpersonal patterns associated with problems in living.
